Branyan homers again as Indians blank Royals

05/13/2010 - Kansas City, MO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Russell Branyan hit his third homer in two games, and Fausto Carmona pitched five shutout innings before the rains came, as the Cleveland Indians notched a 4-0 win over the struggling Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Branyan ended 2-for-4 with two runs driven in for the Indians, who have won three straight, including the first two of this three-game set, on the heels of a five-game slide. Asdrubal Cabrera also had two hits and two RBI, while Jhonny Peralta went 2-for-4 and scored a run in the win.

Carmona (4-1) was pulled after 70 pitches because of a 1 hour, 10 minute rain delay at the end of the fifth inning. He allowed five hits and two walks while fanning two in the start. Aaron Laffey, Chris Perez and Tony Sipp combined to shut out the Royals for the last four innings.

Alberto Callaspo hit two doubles for the Royals, who saw their losing streak stretch to seven. Scott Podsednik and Mike Aviles each added two hits in defeat.

Kyle Davies (2-2) also went five frames due to the rain and gave up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Indians squandered two chances with runners in scoring position in the first four innings, while Kansas City went scoreless on three such opportunities in the first four frames.

Cleveland finally broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth. Peralta and Mark Grudzielanek both singled leading off, and Mike Redmond put down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Cabrera followed with a two-run single up the middle.

Carmona set the Royals down in order in the fifth before the game was delayed. When play resumed, Branyan followed an Austin Kearns one-out single with a shot over the right field wall for a 4-0 lead in the sixth.

Laffey came in to pitch and threw around a two-out single in the home sixth, then got two outs in the seventh before Perez struck out Jose Guillen with the bases loaded.

Perez stayed on to pitch a scoreless eighth, and Sipp threw a perfect ninth to seal the win.

Game Notes

Carmona is one win shy of matching his 2009 total...Despite the loss, the Royals are 8-3 in Davies' last 11 starts dating back to last season...Cleveland has won six of its last seven in Kansas City...Royals catcher Jason Kendall played in his 2,000th career game...The game also featured a separate 26-minute rain delay.
