02/01/2010 -
New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Washington Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin
has been selected the NHL's First Star for the month of January.
The fifth-year winger, who was named team captain earlier in January, compiled
nine goals, 17 assists and a plus-16 rating over 15 games as Washington posted
a 13-2-0 record for the month, which includes their current 10-game win
streak.
Ovechkin failed to record at least one point in only three contests, and
posted multi-point efforts on eight occasions. His best game of the month came
in a 6-1 rout of Toronto on January 15, when the 24-year-old racked up five
points, including a career-best four assists.
Canucks forward Henrik Sedin finished in the second spot by recording six
goals and 25 points in only 13 games for Vancouver. The Swede failed to score
on only two occasions and posted nine multi-point games during the month,
topping out with five three-point efforts including a two-goal night on
January 23 against Chicago.
Currently, Sedin leads the NHL in scoring with 78 points, two better than
Ovechkin.
Florida goaltender Vokoun nabbed third place by going 8-4-2 with a 1.50 goals-
against average and four shutouts to keep the Panthers in the thick of the
Eastern Conference playoff chase. The 33-year-old Czech's best game of the
month came in a 2-0 win over Toronto on January 23, when he stopped all 39
shots he faced.
