Cards turn to Carpenter in hopes of preventing Astros' sweep

Baseball Betting Lines

05/13/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter is off to another unblemished start and will take the mound for the eighth time this season in today's finale of a three-game series versus the Houston Astros at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter opened the 2009 campaign 4-0 over his first six outings and hasn't missed a beat a year later. Last season's NL Cy Young Award runner-up is 4-0 with a 2.80 earned run average in seven trips to the mound, but is coming off a no-decision at Pittsburgh last Friday. In the 4-3 win over the Pirates, Carpenter allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

The right-hander, who had won consecutive starts before heading to the Steel City, has enjoyed success throughout his career against Houston. Carpenter is 6-3 with a 2.72 ERA in 14 career matchups with the Astros.

St. Louis needs Carpenter at his best Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep after the Cards suffered 9-6 setback last night. Kyle Lohse remained winless (0-3) on the 2010 season and gave up nine runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits and four walks through five innings.

"I don't feel like anything's wrong," Lohse said on the club's site. "I just keep missing up in the zone. I keep looking mechanically to something, and there's no one thing that I'm doing over and over that's a problem.

Ryan Ludwick had three hits, Albert Pujols collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while both Matt Holliday and David Freese finished with an RBI and a run scored for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who dropped the opener of this set by a 6-3 score and have lost six of eight games. St. Louis hasn't been swept since losing all three matchups with Milwaukee to close out the 2009 campaign.

Houston has picked up steam on this road trip and will shoot for its fourth straight win as well as a sweep of the rival Cardinals. In yesterday's victory in the second portion of this series, Wandy Rodriguez found his way back into the win column thanks to his offense and six decent innings. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, and five hits.

"He came out so aggressive and you could just tell his demeanor was good on the mound," Astros manager Brad Mills said of Rodriguez. "He had confidence and he was throwing the ball real well."

Matt Lindstrom recorded his eighth save by getting the final out of the game, while Lance Berkman belted a two-run homer and Jeff Keppinger went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored for Houston.

The Astros are still last in the Central standings, 7 1/2 games behind the Cards, and will also visit San Francisco and Los Angeles on the road swing.

Houston's Bud Norris will take the mound this afternoon for his seventh start of 2010. Norris split his first two decisions and is 0-3 with a 9.16 ERA in four starts since.

He has dropped three straight starts and is coming off a four-inning performance last Friday in a 7-0 defeat at the hands of San Diego. Norris was battered for five runs -- four earned -- on five hits and three walks while striking out seven Padres.

The right-hander has given up at least three earned runs in four straight appearances, but did beat St. Louis back on April 15 at Busch Stadium. In the 5-1 victory over the Cardinals, Norris allowed an unearned run in five innings and is a perfect 3-0 in three career starts against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals took two of three from the Astros from April 12-15 and have still won 11 of the past 20 in the series.
